RESILIENT

ADAPTATION

Implements tangible, action-oriented projects that address community priorities in response to climate hazards.

RESILIENT ADAPTATION
OVERVIEW
.

CRC’s Resilient Adaptation program implements tangible, action-oriented projects that address community priorities in response to climate change and sea level rise, ranging from contributions to city-wide adaptation and resilience planning to interventions for individual residents and families.

Addressing health and safety issues promotes longevity and aging in place, allowing our long-term residents to remain in their communities.

As the impacts of climate change create more frequent and intense weather events, existing inequalities will compound, leaving low-income and communities of color at even greater risk.  We currently have 9 active projects and contracting services, with 4 completed highlighted below.

EAST PALO ALTO RAIN GARDENS
& WATER CISTERNS

IN  PARTNERSHIP WITH

Specifically, in 2023 we were able to secure funding from the California Coastal Conservancy to pursue 25 no-cost rain garden & water cistern system installations. These activities included 6 community workshops to teach about the benefits of rain gardens, identifying site locations, and providing training to 5 East Palo Alto “Garden Ambassadors”, a paid work opportunity to support the installation, maintenance and 2-year homeowner support.

With CRC, Fresh Approach, Grassroots Ecology, and our Community Ambassadors working together to complete the installation, the initiative will harness rising community & nature-based solutions to transform East Palo Alto residential urban spaces into vibrant rain gardens and rainwater harvesting areas that buffer residents from the impacts of climate change and produce multiple ecological and public health benefits.

WHAT IS A
RAIN GARDEN
& RAIN HARVESTING?

A rain garden is a landscaped area that collects, absorbs, and filters stormwater runoff from roof tops, driveways, patios, and other hard surfaces that don’t allow water to soak in.  Rainwater collection helps communities better manage heavy amounts of rainfall and stormwater by slowing it down and using natural spaces to provide an added layer of filtration before the water reaches your home.

Additionally, Climate Resilient Communities and our partners help provide a cohesive system between rain garden installations and maintenance with rain cisterns and irrigation systems for water storage as a cohesive system.

Assessment & Design

CRC works with eligible recipients to confirm the feasibility of rain gardens and/or cisterns at homes.

Our partners then assess factors that will inform the design develop a
maintenance plan with appropriate levels of support and monitoring from their local Garden Ambassadors.
