Derek Garcia
AmeriCorps Neighbor to Neighbor Fellow
Born and raised in East Side San Jose, Derek has lived his whole life in a community where climate change is something they're already dealing with, especially through extreme heat and poor air quality. Living in these communities showed him that climate resilience isn’t just a global necessity, it's a very local and prevalent one as well. Derek has always been passionate about volunteering and giving back to the community, whether it was volunteering at his local hospital after school or working as a camp counselor in college for youth from underserved communities.

Working as the AmeriCorps Neighbor to Neighbor Fellow, Derek aims to help build and maintain a strong volunteer framework with CRC, ensuring that community members continue to have their voices heard and opportunities to give back to the places they live in. Derek is proud to work with CRC and be part of a team that emphasizes not only providing support, but also empowering communities and uplifting their voices to promote unity and create immediate improvements in their everyday lives. He has always been invested in helping others and hopes to continue doing so while working with CRC. He finds great enthusiasm and support in CRC’s goal of empowering low-income, underserved communities with the resources and power to respond to climate challenges.
